Artist Date: Skyline balcony, new series... 08.08.2017

It's been a while since I have posted an Artist Date, and although Sunday's Date did not involve any travel on my part, it still was an incredibly productive afternoon.

View from the balcony
Some Artist Dates are better than others, but yesterday I found myself with over three hours all to myself and I decided to spend that time out on our balcony enjoying the beautiful weather and working on my latest project.

I love the balcony at our apartment - it gets the sun in morning, but come early afternoon, it starts getting shady and is perfect for lazy afternoons reading or working outside. Our apartment is located in the last building of our complex, so our balcony faces the woods and allows us to enjoy the local wildlife - mostly little feathered friends, but I was visited by a squirrel Sunday afternoon who decided to hang out for a bit, so that was nice.

Authenticity - in progress
I have learned since I completed the I Ching Project that I tend to work well within a series and have since created several that I am working on simultaneously. My latest series is called Values and will ultimately consist of 35 15x15 pictures.

Why Values? Well, honestly, I was looking for a list of something, anything, that would allow me to push new idea forward and I came across a list of values on-line and pared it down to a "manageable" 35.

I want to challenge myself with this new project and have been experimenting with differently borders, panels and other architectural designs and see how they work with when paired with Celtic Knots and evolving shapes.

Achievement - in progress
I began the project on 27 July and I am thrilled that I have three Values pictures in progress already: Authenticity, Achievement and Adventure as the initial goal for the series was to completed one picture every four weeks.

For a while, I drifted away from adding India ink washes to my pictures, but I think by experimenting with more controlled washes and textures, maybe I can push this idea to another level (see left "Achievement").

For this week's picture - Adventure - I decided to test out a new border design that came to me in the middle of movie night a couple of weeks ago - good thing we were at Chunky's and I had a some extra light and a table next to me:

Initial design for Adventure - completed prior to Artist Date

Adventure is starting to take shape
I like the idea of adding just a small amount of color to the pictures... I have tried a couple of different colors and like the red and black combination the most. Here, I had an idea to make a set of rings red, but hesitated making the entire ring red at first as I still hadn't decided on the final look of the shapes above the rings:

I am debating on whether or not to call Adventure completed at this point or if I want to add any ink layers to it yet.. Right now, it's taped to my studio wall next to Authenticity so I can look at them for a couple of days... or so.
